Project brief : South Helwan Power Plant consists of three supercritical thermal steam units, with a nominal electricity generating capacity of 650 megawatts (MWe) each, the overall generating capacity of the power plant will be 1950MWe. The power plant will utilize natural gas as its primary fuel, and also have the capability to operate using mazout (heavy fuel oil) to provide security of electricity supply in the event that gas supplies are unavailable for any reason. In addition, emergency generators, for the plant safe shut down, operating on sollar oil (light fuel oil) will also be provided on-site to drive key items of equipment within the power plant in the event of a power supply failure, and sollar oil will also be able to be used, if required, to operate the auxiliary boiler during start-up. The project is situated on approximately more than 37 hectare rectangle- shaped piece of land located in a rural/desert area approximately 10 km south of the village of Kureimat, in the Helwan Governorate on the east bank of the Nile River.
